After a tense and dramatic election, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has not conceded defeat in his first comments post-election; however, in not so many words, his actions say so.
He authorized his chief of staff to begin the transition process while admitting to the Supreme Court that “it’s over.” His over 44-hour silence raised concerns about an American-style dispute brewing.
In an act in the name of democracy, Brazil football fans cleared blockades set up by far-right supporters of Bolsonaro falsely alleging election fraud and calling for military intervention “Armed forces, save Brazil!” some chanted, according to the Associated Press.
Bolsonaro has yet to congratulate Lula, who won by a slim margin. The current scene looks eerily similar to the Trump-styled claims and Bolsonaro may be borrowing from his playbook to keep his base alive for his possible comeback in 2026.
